We turn the fuel pump on when we are using the engine.  I get that it can also be used to move fuel from tank to tank through the Racor, but I was under the impression (possibly in error) that it helped lift the fuel out of the tanks to the engine, taking some stress away from engine pump.

Have we been operating under a false assumption?

I think this practice was handed down from the previous owner.

We also have a lift pump for the Generator.

As John wrote, the pump can transfer fuel from one tank to another.  The fuel passes through the RACOR filter during the transfer thus cleaning it.  The pump is also useful to prime the RACOR after a filter change.

May be a different set-up on yours, but on our boat it is a fuel transfer pump used to transfer fuel from one tank to another and/or to polish fuel. You just have to be careful and intentional when positioning the to/from/return and main fuel selectors on your manifold (if multiple tanks).

Kevin and jt11791,

What is the purpose of this pump on your boats?  Fuel system priming, diesel heater, or ???

Thanks,
Peter

I replaced that pump.  I bought a Walbro FRB-13, 7psi 12v pump.  I think it was not an exact replacement, but it works well.

I have a Hylas 46 with an external fuel pump that is switched on/off at the battery control panel on the side under the nav seat.  The documentation that came with the boat says that it is a Walbro Marine Electronic Fuel Pump, but there are no markings on the pump itself.  FFrom what I can see on line, Walbro does not make a replacement pump that would fit.

It is located at the forward end of the engine room compartment attached to the floor boards (i.e., right at your feet when you open the stairs to access the engine compartment).

Has anyone found a replacement for this pump?

Thanks,
Kevin Kinports
