Thanks to all. Very helpful insights.
The reason I thought you had to change the wiring is because someone told me that I had to. Glad to see that this is not the case.
Best.

Peter,
Ambition is a 2002 Hylas 46 and we recently completed a full conversion of our OEM battery, charging and inverting system from AGM to a mix of AGM and LiFePO4. I would be pleased to discuss the journey our decision to covert along with some of the reasons for the decisons. This was quite the learning experience!
If you send me a PM with your phone number I will gladly call you and we can discuss Ambitions new setup.

I made this conversion a couple of years ago.  I didnt change any wiring, just reprogrammed my charging sources, alternator, solar, and A/C chargers.  Its been a great upgrade.  We live aboard fulltime and this has been some of the  best money spent.  What makes you worry that wiring needs to be changed?  Most AGM batteries can output more current than LiFePos and the AGMs take more current while charging so your cables are already large enough.

Peter,

I had a standard alternator with internal regulator.  If you have an external regulator it is probably programmable.  I did not have to change other wiring except for the inverter.

Check your insurance policy.  Some still exclude coverage for lithiums, and Gowrie requires that they be US batteries installed by a pro.

Hi Joel
Thanks for getting back.
Did you replace the wiring and why did you replace the alternator? I ask this because I have recently updated my alternator with a new Balmar alternator and wondered if I could keep that and install a new voltage regulator - if needed.
best.

Peter,

I replaced the old battery charger, alternator and regulator and added an inverter.

Upgrading from AGM GPL-8DL to Li batteries
« Reply #1 on: May 03, 2023, 03:58:27 PM »
Hello all
I have a 2003 Hylas 46. am considering upgrading my house batteries from AGM GPL-8DL to Li. I am at the beginning of my research and am unable to determine what wiring I need to replace. What wiring have other owners replaced when converting from AGM to Li.
Thanks.
