We got a new rudder in 2021. When the boatyard installed it, the upper bearing insert was installed up-side-down and they also forgot to put set screws into the housing. The insert moved up and down along with the entire rudder. We noticed for several month variable stiffness at the helm. Eventually the top bearing completely bound, causing the aft lazarette bulkhead to crack. Since then 3 haul outs, new upper and middle bearing, new rudder, steering rebuilt.
Mark the different top bearing parts and while underway check that there is no movement over time.

I have a mamba system on my Hylas 46 (#66).  The steering is quite stiff on occasion, although it seems to be working well. No issues with autopilot. Is this normal for these systems?

We are about to cross from Beaufort, NC to the Azores end of May. When are you leaving?

Thanks for the contact, that may accelerate things. I am in touch with Lewmar US and they are responsive but very slow. No part number for the splined end fittings yet.
Prior to the failure we heard some bangs. Actually I was under the assumption that the upper bevel head may have failed. When I went to manual steering I felt some slippage at the helm. It took about 30 minutes until the steering failed completely. Condition were pretty rough with 20+kts and confused seas in the GS. After math revealed that the connection steering shaft, coming from the reduction gearbox, to universal joint had failed. In attached picture when the steering wheel was turned the yellow rod followed, while the blue one did not. Just wiggled a little bit. When I looked at the universal/shaft connection, I noticed that the end fittings are not completely overlapping with the joint thread. Off by 1/4 inch. I had the universal joints replaced at our last boatyard stay, and now wonder if they shaft was not correctly aligned, which may have caused our problem.

Get hold of Cliff at Yacht Steering Services in the UK. 44 (0)7970 820522. He knows everything about mamba. And he runs a repair and spare parts service.

As I am about to take off on an Atlantic crossing solo I am very interested in your experience. I have checked the steering for any issues, wiggle between input and output parts of the rods, made sure bolts and nuts are tight etc and I have a new autopilot head and motor drive (the old as a spare). All seems to be in good shape.  Did you have any warning of failure?  Wiggle, slippage, noises?  Steering breakdown would be very bad for me on my sail, so I am all ears!  Did you have any circumstances in the past that might have over stressed the steering?  Any thoughts much appreciated.

Our mamba steering failed recently. As it turns out the universal joint to splined shaft has been worn. While I am able to source the universal joint from Mauriprosailing, I am unable to find a replacement shaft with splined ends. Anyone has replaced the steering shaft and knows a good source.
