That would work too!  If you have a sawzall after you pull the shaft forward you could cut the bearing instead of having to press it out. 
The transmission is an easy swap if you can get the bolts out of the shaft coupling.

Got it.  Think there is enough room.  I have to replace transmissions, so I was considering taking out the transmission, taking off propeller and pushing shaft in.  Then the bearing could more easily be removed with the shaft out of the way.

Compare the length of the bearing to the distance between the end of the shaft and the rudder strut.

When you say measure the clearance, what do you mean?

Did you measure to see if there is enough clearance if you simply remove the prop and use a cutlass bearing press?  I believe that is how it was done on my 44.

I'd like to replace my cutlass bearing on our H44.  I'm hoping it is possible by removing tranny, and propeller and pushing drive shaft forward once tranny has been removed.   Has anyone got advice on how to remove cutlass bearing on a Hylas 44?
