Hylas Discussion / Re: Edson steering cables on a 49

Joel
We own "Over Budget"  a H49 - #16 and have rebuilt the steering including  the chain at the wheel, the cables back to the quadrant, all conduits and fittings.  I did nothing with the sheaves - they were solid and showed no play.  Mine are not heavily loaded. but rather turn the direction of the cables. My sheaves run on two separate shafts and I can turn them without moving the cables.  Why do you want to eliminate the box?  We are  currently in Annapolis for the Boat Show.

I just replaced both freezer and fridge with the following item about a year ago and they have been working perfectly.

What model Hylas did those struts fit?

On Renegade we got rid of the gas springs and replaced them with a simple catch that holds the lid fully open.

Re-opening this thread because I need advice....but the data I'll share just adds to the confusion pot, I fear.

The top hatches on Stellar Blue's fridges both contain Attwood's "Spring Lift" series gas springs. The Part No. is clearly visible: SL 36-10. They are +/= 17.25" long in their full extension.

But neither Attwood nor any competitor I can find carries springs with those specs. They DO have an SL 36-20 of the right length and cup size.  I worry, however, that a too-strong spring might dissuade the hatch from closing tightly, which is a worse result than having a hatch that needs always to be propped up.

Finally, in my search, I learned that the functioning gas is temperature sensitive and apparently "temp compensating" springs ought to be used in conditions below 0C.  Guess at what temps freezers function? And, of course, those are more spendy. But are they really necessary?  Last point is that it is - ta da! - the freezer hatch whose spring has failed.

Any insight very gratefully desired. Stellar Blue is an H49.
