Mooring cleat screws
« Reply #1 on: January 14, 2018, 11:21:02 PM »
I planned on replacing the 5/16" SS machine screws and backing plates holding the mooring cleats to the deck on my 44, mainly because I don't trust some of the 30 year old SS fasteners in Blue Moon. I randomly pulled one of the screws from the starboard bow cleat to measure it, and found that the screw has a crack in it that extends halfway through the screw where the head joins the shaft. That certainly reinforced my idea of replacing the screws! Having a cleat to which the anchor rode is tied leave the deck in 50 kt winds would be a bad thing...
Owners of boats of my vintage (1987) might consider at least checking the integrity of these fasteners.
