Mark:

I don't remember exactly as the work was coordinated thorough our diesel mechanic.  However, i believe it was a couple of weeks from removal to return.   Cost was somewhere between $500 - 1000.

I recently had my generator injection pump overhauled by a company in FL called:

Everglades Diesel Injection Service, Inc.
Tel:  (954) 522-1780
Fax: (954) 522-1781
www.evergladesdiesel.com

They were excellent and could give you much more detailed answers.

Thanks Scott!  That sounds exactly like what is happening.

1)   How long did it take to get rebuilt (I’m in Split, Croatia at the moment and I know they have a shop here)?
2)   Roughly how much did it cost?

Mark:

We had a problem a couple years ago that sounds similar.  In our case the engine would go into gear but not accelerate above idle speed, even though the throttle linkage was moving on the engine.   Sometimes after  a few attempts of in and  out of gear and to full throttle position,  it would finally accelerate.   It turned out that the injection pump did need to be rebuilt.  They said the sleeve or similar that moves inside the pump to vary the fuel flow was sticking.   Once rebuilt, we did not have any further problems like this.

Has anyone experienced 'throttle lag?  My Hylas 54 with a Yanmar 4JH3-DTE is suffering from this increasingly.

We are having a strange throttling up problem.  It used to only happen occasionally when switching into reverse but now it is starting to happen when engaging into forward.  When I push the throttle into gear, sometimes the RPM’s have a significant lag ( 1 to 10 seconds) before they start to suddenly climb to the appropriate rpm’s in a rush. This is getting worse and happening more often.  I have changed the filters and I can hear the gear engage when I leave neutral/idle but the lagged response is really strange.  I talked to Larry on Berkley East and he said that he just had the same thing happen to him for the first time just a few days ago while trying to go into forward.

All of the throttle/gear linkages appear to be moving appropriately. Strangely, it does not lag when I push the button in and attempt in neutral.  Miles Pore suggested it may be the fuel injection pump that needs to be rebuilt since Yanmar does not make this engine anymore.

Note: I had new injectors put in this winter. But it started doing it last summer a couple of times.  It has continued, and slowly gotten worse, after the new injector tips were put in.

Any thoughts?  This is really scary!
